Trial opens for 3 men accused in rapes of USD students

A group of college students was hanging out at a Mission Beach condominium in 2006 when they were attacked by several men who entered through an unlocked door, a prosecutor said Tuesday.
The University of San Diego students – two women and two men – were terrified by the intruders, who forced them to participate in sexual acts and stole items from the two-story condo.

Strzelanina w Los Angeles, pięć osób zginęło

Pięć ofiar śmiertelnych - to bilans tragicznych wydarzeń w Los Angeles. Doszło tam do wymiany ognia między policją a mężczyzną podejrzanym o zamordowanie trojga członków rodziny.
Policja z Los Angeles odebrała w środę telefon od mężczyzny, który przyznał się do zabicia trzech osób. Następnie zabarykadował się w swoim mieszkaniu. Rano oddział specjalny policji (SWAT) zdecydował się na interwencję, używając m.in. tarana i gazu łzawiącego.
W wymianie ognia zginął mężczyzna, który się zabarykadował, a dwaj policjanci zostali ranni. Jeden z nich zmarł w szpitalu.

Była to pierwsza ofiara śmiertelna w 41-letniej historii SWAT w Los Angeles.

She still remembers hearing the gunshots outside her front door from her bedroom. She remembers getting that fateful phone call from a neighbor who told her “my baby had been shot” and running up a hill with her brother to a car where her beloved oldest child, Kendra Mercedes Smith, affectionately known as Muffy, lay dying.....

“Kendra was everywhere,” Evans said. “She was a busy bee. She did far more than I knew what she did. I had a good girl.”

Juror Admits Sabotaging Murder Trial
Saturday, May 6, 2006A juror pleaded guilty yesterday to rigging the murder trial of a childhood friend in one of the most brazen acts of jury tampering ever exposed in D.C. Superior Court.
Charged with contempt, conspiracy and obstruction of justice, Jovanda Blackson, 27, admitted that she lied her way onto the jury in Lamiek Fortson’s case last year and that she conspired with Fortson and his wife to derail the prosecution.

This year, the men were tried again and convicted. Yesterday, Fortson, 28, already serving 60 years for the murder, pleaded guilty to a charge of obstruction of justice.
The plot nearly went undetected. A tip from a jailhouse informant kept it from staying a secret. She didn’t tell the judge that she knew Fortson or that two of her relatives had been jailed for murder. Either disclosure would have disqualified her from the jury.
The charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison, but because she has no criminal record, Blackson is likely to receive a prison term of several years when she is sentenced July 14.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of political activists don’t do this as well.

Home invaders put gun to woman's throat while looking for son

A 44-year-old Buffalo woman was the victim of a home invasion Sunday night when three men barged into her apartment, held a silver handgun to her throat, and stole her belongings, police reported today.

The home invasion occurred about 10:30 p.m. in the city's South Police District, but police did not disclose the street.

Police said the three intruders covered the woman's face with a towel, held a gun to her throat and stole her cell phone and digital camera, valued at $250.

Police said the three men were looking for the victim's son, who they said owed them $2,000.

Man faces life in prison in 1998 shooting of Haines City's Christopher Horner.
Although West and Fowler are cousins, West said he also considers his fellow officers family.
Horner's body was discovered March 3, 1998, inside Oakland Cemetery. He had been shot behind the left ear with his own handgun.

The 35-year-old father of six children had been with the Haines City Police Department for about 14 months.
During the early-morning hours of the shooting, prosecutors said, Fowler joined some other robbers not affiliated with Fowler's gang to commit a bank robbery.
